The Aro gTér lineage of Vajrayana Buddhism

The Aro gTér Lineage of the Nyingma Tradition of Vajrayana Buddhism is a gTérma lineage based in dzogchen view.

The teachings of the Aro gTér are principally concerned with transforming our everyday experience of being, rather than renouncing it or achieving an esoteric or spiritualised mode of existence. Our aim is to engender cheerful kindness and courageous openness; through the liberated qualities of generosity, clarity, creativity, determination, and spaciousness. Engaging with the senses, nature, the Arts, and craft is emphasised as part of bringing meditation practice into everyday life.

The non-monastic ordination available in Vajrayana — and within the Aro gTér — is known as the gö kar chang lo’i dé. Ngakpas and ngakmas — male and female respectively — are the non-celibate and non-abstemious ordained practitioners. They wear white raiment - gö kar - and keep long uncut hair - chang lo.

The teachings of the Aro gTér descend from a lineage of enlightened women, beginning with Yeshé Tsogyel. She was the female Tantric Buddha, who, together with Padmasambhava, founded the Nyingma tradition of Buddhism. The Aro gTér is a small family lineage within that tradition founded by the female visionary Lama Aro Lingma in 1909.
