A member of the public on an Open Teaching Retreat asked Ngak’chang Rinpoche if he was enlightened. He replied “No, sir - alas I am not. I am benighted. I live in darkness. That’s why I love sparkling Yuletide Lights — and why I keep them up half the year; much to the amusement of our neighbours. They are still up now and it’s the 3rd of March.
I enjoy seeing coloured lights in the dark. It is very much like seeing the glorious colours of the daylight world — so I’m not averse to diurnal experience. My only accomplishment—and one that I continually strive to accomplish—is being a Nyingma ngakpa. Kyabjé Düd’jom Rinpoche Jig’drèl Yeshé Dorje ordained me as a ngakpa on the 31st of October 1971 — and I have attempted to be worthy of it ever since.’
